The Flutopia 5K!
The Flutopia Initiative began hosting The Flutopia 5k! in the summer of 2013. The race's unique feature is professional area musicians of every style imaginable playing throughout the course. Open to runners of all ages and experience levels, an added bonus is the bugle call event, the "Flutastic 50-Yard Dash" held for younger children​ after the main event.
All proceeds from the event go to helping fund Centre Volunteers in Medicine, whose mission statement can be read here, and Doctors Without Borders, whose mission statement you can read here.

The Flutopia 5k!'s original and repeat home has been State College, PA's Tom Tudek Memorial Park, with a special appearance at the Boalsburg Military Museum. As part of the 2022 10th Anniversary Celebration, in addition to the State College race at Tom Tudek Park August 6th, a unique Flutopia 5k! will be held during the 50th National Flute Association convention on the Chicago Riverwalk featuring international flute ensembles on Friday, August 12th.
The Race
Our hallmark tradition is replacing a starting gun with a flutist rendition of "Flight of the Bumblebee".
The Musicians
Area professionals and outstanding rising professionals volunteer their talents for the cause, performing along the route in key locations to serenade the runners and walkers.
The Kids!
For the kids too! The Flutastic 50-Yard Dash is accompanied by trumpet fanfare, and gives the youngsters an opportunity to stretch their legs
Virtual Flutopia Runs (2020 and 2021)
The Flutopia 5k, your favorite musical charity running event, went virtual for the years of 2020 and 2021 and expanded distances to include 1 mile, 5k, 10k and The Flutastic 50 yard dash for kids 10 and under. Despite the global pandemic, we were pleased to offer our participants the opportunity to run, walk or do both on their chosen route and on their chosen day and time between July 31-August 31.
Each registrant was given a playlist that includes our flutabulous rendition of The Flight of the Bumblebee to get you started, followed a snazzy variety of music and artistry to help you maintain an uplifted spirit throughout your run.
All music was performed and donated by our fabulous Flutopia Musicians, and the playlist length was designed to carry participants through any distance. Upon completion of the overall event, participants were sent a souvenir bib and medal with the slogan: My Feet Fly for Flutopia! As usual, the event benefitted Centre Volunteers in Medicine and Doctors Without Borders.
